Pittsburgh: The City of Lights? In celebration of the Year of Glass, Pittsburgh is keeping its lights on for visitors with a unique public lighting design by French artist Lucette De Rugy.

By transforming buildings in downtown Pittsburgh into spectacular works of art, the first Pittsburgh Festival of Lights features the largest lighting installation of its kind in the United States.

Downtown buildings that are illuminated include:
* Penn Avenue Place (the former Horne’s Building) at Stanwix and Penn Avenue

* Agnes Katz Plaza at the corner of Penn and Seventh

* Rear façade of 411 Seventh Avenue at intersection of Liberty and William Penn Place

* The historic Omni William Penn Hotel at 530 William Penn Place.

Free and a must-see for all ages, the display runs through Sunday, July 8.

    Hey there,

    Quick question:

I’m going to be in Pittsburgh for one day starting on the evening of Tuesday, July 17. If you had to recommend one arts-related event or show for me to attend, what would it be?

    Much thanks in advance!

    Ian

Happy to help suggest some arts-related events in Pittsburgh. The question is: What do you like? There’s plenty to see and do around the city.

To narrow the field, here are a few things you might consider:

    * In the Cultural District (Downtown Pittsburgh) on Tuesday nights, there are free outdoor jazz performances at the corner of Seventh Street and Penn Avenue from 5-7pm. Bassist Dwayne Dolphin is playing on the 17th. The free JazzLive series moves into the Backstage Bar right next door from 7-10pm. www.pgharts.org

    * Before 6pm when the gallery closes, you can then check out Wood Street Galleries in the Cultural District for the newest installation by Michael Hardesty. They’re also open on Wed. (ARTSINPGH video to come). Down the street is a great photo exhibit called Conflict at SPACE gallery. www.woodstreetgalleries.org and www.spacepittsburgh.org

    * Afterwards, you can pick between seeing Camelot at the Benedum Center or Chicago at Heinz Hall–if you like musical theater. Both are beautifully restored theaters. www.culturaldistrict.org

    * If you’re looking for something a little more offbeat, check out City Theatre’s comedy, The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?, on the hip South Side where bars and nightlife abound. www.citytheatrecompany.org

    * Lastly, you might consider a trip to Phipps Conservatory to see the Dale Chihuly glass sculptures set inside lush botanical gardens. A visit at night is well worth it. www.phipps.conservatory.org

Whatever you may decide, I hope you have a great stay in Pittsburgh. Thanks for posting on ARTSINPGH. Bon Voyage!
